Removing electronics on lift out

Take them all out and keep them somewhere dry and warm. They will repay the kindness in the long run. It has nothing to do with security. It is moisture you want to worry about.

If your instruments are in the saloon will this be heated to avoid condensation inside the instrument housings? Having said that, pure water will not harm electrics and electronics if it is dryed out before power is put back on. I winter just along the coast at Littlehampton and my saloon condensates heavily if my small heater does not work. I take my instruments out and do not have any troubles in the spring when re-commissioning.

Re: don\'t bother...

If it can be unplugged, I would take it out and store at home in a dry place. Personally, I would not attempt to remove log, e/s etc. as they are built in. I keep my boat in the water all winter and have not had problems with condensation inside electronics.

On my last bopat , I deliberately chose waterproof electronics including things like the vhf. I never removed them once over the 11 years I had the boat and I never had a problem.

It\'s not the instruments that suffer from the damp

But the various connections, especially those tab-connections under a deck-head.

I've found the earth return is the one that always gives a problem and it's difficult to trace because the circuit appears complete, until you put a load on it - usually it responds to a continuity test, but not always.

If you disconnect, make sure that you have previously labelled each cable to save reconnecting incorrectly next spring.

Make sure that all connections, spades etc left on board are covered in an appropriate gunge to protect from corrosion over the winter and clean off very thoroughly before reconnecting next year.

I have always removed all equipment including instrumentation which I have made relatively easy by mounting
the log.gps echo sounder, wind etc on a swing out mount so not only can they be viewed from either the
cockpit or saloon, but they can also be unplugged and the whole unit removed for dry storage at home.
I do however wonder what the insurance situation is as if left on the boat they are covered by the craft's insurance. But are they covered at home?
