removing butyl sealant

I've removed the front window fro the boat, and taken the plastic window from the alloy frame. I'm now left with years old butyl sealant, which, short of picking off tiny pieces at a time, is proving a nightmare to remove from the frames. Any easy way to get this stuff off? I've tried to soften it under hot water but seems to have no effect. Stuff looks like Blutac...
