Hi all,

I'd like to know how the headlining on a 1989 Fairline 40 is attached to the roof as I'd like to re-cover it as it has sagged.

Any ideas would be great. I have removed the lights and this doesn't seem to shed any light.

TIA
Matt

Any further ideas on this? I'm hoping to get down to the yacht in the next few weeks to start on the lining. Just want to brace myself before I get there!! Thanks :)

The only advise I can give is some Fairlines of around that year have panels secured by metal brackets screwed to back of panels, you have to start one end and remove in order. Look for clues at an end to see where to start.

How would I access these brackets? Sorry to be a pain!

You will need to look closely at the end panels to see what end they start at, that's assuming you have the panels that have metal plates screwed to the back of them, once you get the first one down the rest are straight forward.
Sorry can't be more help, a picture may help.

MY '89 Corniche has a headlining in several sections. The sections were not fixed themselves, but held in place by wooden batons running from port to starboard.

The covered panels would be held in place while someone screwed in the uncovered wooden baton. Then the batons were covered by gluing the material to it, and then tucking it back under the baton to hide the edges.

If your headlining is anything like my old T35 you will find that the plywood sheets are screwed to timber battens set in the coachroof. The foam backed vinyl is then glued to the plywood sheets in similar manner that decorator would put paper on a ceiling, and then the edges are tucked in. Removing the headlining will reveal the screws that hold the timber sheets in place. You can then remove the sheets and recover them with new vinyl, gluing and stapling. Refix using the strong type of Velcro. You will probably end up with more joints because you are covering each panel whereas originally the factory fitting would have covered adjacent panel joints.
These people have everything you need to complete the task.
