Has anyone tried this? is it any good?

(For those who've not heard of this, have a look at www.bcaviation.co.uk and press the option for paint remover. Removall 610 supposedly works by soaking through all the antifoul and erm expanding when it reaches the GRP, thus pulling the paint off without acid).

Plan to use this in January when boat comes out, and will then report to the forum on its effectiveness - Mine is a particularly difficult problem because as well as the anti-foul there is also six coats of VC tar!!!!

Why remove the VC Tar - it's an anti-osmosis treatment?

A year ago when my boat came out after it's first year in my ownership, the anti-fouling was flaking very badly and I decided to strip it all off. I took advice from the surveyor who surveyed the boat when I bought it - he said to go back to the VC Tar and then put three coats of epoxy on top of the VC Tar followed by two coats of anti-fouling.

I wanted to use Seajet anti-fouling and he researched it and recommended Seajet 117 as the epoxy coat. It comes in two colours so you can use alternate colours in each coat. It and the Seajet 033 Shogun anti-fouling went on very easily. Quick jet wash when she came out this year and I reckon she'd do another season although I'm not going to push it that far!

The difficult job was getting the old anti-fouling off - I used Dilunett - it took two treatments with some very messy and hard scraping work after each one. Given the time and effort it took, if I had to do it again, I'd probably spend a few hundred and get it done professionally.

If you really want to get the VC Tar off - you've got a *real* job on - it's tough as old boots!

VC Tar has got to come off as I am fitting a bow thruster and bulbous bows. I have removed small areas before with my sandvik scraper, but didnt fancy the effort involved. Removall is supposed to be able to cope with it, if all else fails, I will attack it with my sandblaster!!!!!!
