I have a small trailer sailer - 1 ton bilge keels. Ideally I only want third party insurance but it would be nice to be covered for the cost of recovery/disposal if it sank somewhere where it couldn't be left.

Zurich offer £15,000 (seems a bit small to me) worth if you lose the boat in an incident which is covered - and therefore requires 'fully comp' cover FWOABW.

Is there such a thing as a "3rd party + recovery from the bottom" policy? Or at least a policy that covers more than 15k?

Yep - I insured the Contraption last year with a third-party policy. Can't remember the name now; I found it by Googling "basic boat insurance" but it wasn't actually the Basic Boat company. Removal of wreck was an option on the policy (which I declined since I couldn't imagine a 15' inflatable becoming a hazard to navigation or costly to move :) ).

Just leave it on the bottom! If you are obliged by a third party to recover/remove it then doesn't your third party insurance cover it?

Some yacht clubs, our's is one, insist on insurance for the removal of a 'wreck'. I used to have Third Party only, but for very little more I was able to get fully comp for my 22 footer, including removal of wreck, for about £130. this included 'personal accident' cover, and also a 'get you home' payment.

No, only if you have the Removal of Wreck cover. That's what Removal of Wreck cover is for, the clue's in the name.

Slightly grumpy response Pete? I've only ever bought comprehensive cover for my boats but I too had assumed that third party cover would cover my losses if my boat sank and had to be removed. I bet many people do.

But a quick google does confirm that's certainly not the case, at least with Yachtline policies:

"If you have asked for third party liability only insurance, please note that salvage or wreck removal costs are not included."

It's a perfectly reasonable assumption until you're halfway down a thread specifically about how it doesn't work like that :)

:) - my experience to date is most people only ever read the first and last post on here before replying.
