Remote search- light????

Hi can you recommend any good makes of searchlight on the market and your opinions on halogen vs led etc the boat i'm fitting it to is a merry fisher 925 thanks..

Yes the Marineco are better quality, but also about twice the price, the Jabsco ones work ok, but the motors can corrode up after a few years, I have replaced quite a few of them for customers. The replacement motor /gearbox are about £35 (overpriced, they are nothing more than what you would find in a toy car).

If you can afford it get the Marineco, if you get the jabsco maybe take it apart every couple of years to keep an eye on the motor and give it a clean / grease.

Being a peasant, i fitted the Jabsco one to my MF805. Hardly ever use it, but nice to have it there.

We got vetus, and hand helds, all over the boat, non are any good in the dark. The only ones that do assist are a pair of rubber (land rover) type, fixed to the pulpit rail, any other position on the boat gives you a horrendous throw back. To be honest it is far better to do without them, unless you need it for signalling.

Totally useless for navigation, yes John we find that too. The rare occasions we've used ours have been for mooring up.

I've only ever switched ours on to show people what a waste of time they are. Useless for navigation, and too slow and cumbersome for MOB. I'd get a good quality hand held instead.

I find ours is really useful for spotting the reflective topmarks on beacons, when trying to follow winding and narrow channels. Also good for avoiding moored boats.
It's fitted on the wheelhouse roof but is manual.
