Hi folks,

I am a french guy living in Brest (west end of Brittany).

I've bought a very nice ship in 2010. She is called Peppermint and she is a Carter Ragtime!!!
I could see in that forum some people (one or two guys) talking about her.
I am working on giving her back her beauty and strongness:
- the paint is not brillant anymore
- the deck, meaning the wood in the sandwhich of the deck, has drunk a bit too much of water)
- the rear of the hull (the part in the water) has some rotten fiber, it is on the part that has been built over the former hull.

I would like to have some information (stories, results, design details...) about her. I know she has been built in WindBoats, Norwich; but i sent a mail to the owner and he had no information.
I attached a photo to this post. Hope this help you to remind her. I am going to keep the painting style, just make it fresher!

Thanks

Hi Sarabande,
I have been "google-ing" for a long time trying to collect information about Peppermint and Carter Ragtime ships. I found only 2 web pages talking about her: a post in this forum and the link you posted!

I attach a new picture showing you the surprise I got while getting antifouling away. It is the same on each side of the hull.

"Brest" regards

Bonjour,

Thank you all for your reply.

@Sarabande: when I bought Peppermint, I tried to google information on her and Carter ragtime. I found only two web pages on which 'Peppermint' and 'Carter Ragtime' matched. These two page were a post on this forum and the page you point at!

@savageseadog: what do you call SAS? I'm sorry but I do not know every words on use on a sailing ship, could you tell me what you mean?

The picture attached show you the little surprise I got when scratched antifouling away. It is the same on the other side. It seems to be what is talking about on the web page sarabande indicates ("he was Peppermint, but after the first year's campaigning, she had her stern completely re-modelled and widened with bumps fitted to make her faster.")

"Brest" regards

Hi Burette,

The blog you've uncovered was mine.

I used to own 'Magna Carter' a Carter 3/4 tonner, which isn't the same boat as a Ragtime, but very similar.

Beyond that i've managed to find very little information, other than some of the Carter 33, Carter 3/4 Tonner and Carter Ragtime were built in Norwich, some in East London, and some in Greece... but nothing more.

I did wonder about contacting Northshore who build the Southerly in the southern UK... Dick Carter did quite a lot of design work for them, and might be able to get you some more insight.

Near as I can find out the nearest thing the French have to the SAS are called Commandos Marines They are an elite military service, and the SAS usually wear full body armour and cover their faces, hence the original comment.

Do we assume that was added on top of the existing hull ? So it can just be stripped off without needing a whole lot of glassing up ?

Hello everyone,

I think there has been 3 types of 3/4ton designed by Dick Carter:
1- Carter 3/4 (only 12 ships were built)
2- Carter Ragtime (no information)
3- Carter "????"ine (as I could see in some Classified ads, but I don't remember the name now)

@Boo2: I don't want to remove the whole modification because that means I would have to remove the whole stern! As far as I understand, they cut vertically the former stern, and made a new, wider and longer, one. The modification covers about 10feet of the former hull!

Since the structuce is still here, I am going to try to repair it. It doesnot look impossible, the only thing "hard" is to apply fiber from the bottom up!

I sent a mail to Northshore shipyards, talking about Dick Carter. No answer for now.

Any one has ever raced against a Carter Ragtime?!

I raced against Peppermint in around 1990 when I had a David Thomas-designed 3/4 Tonner of a similar vintage (1976). To be fair, some of Peppermint's sails looked a bit tired at the time. We guessed that this was why both we and other similar types (UFO 34, SHE 36) had no trouble beating her.

I used to sail on Quickstep, a Carter 42 which belonged to some friends between about 1995 and 2000. I think she was built in 1973, and I have a memory of "competing" against her in the IrishbSea races, (ISORA), in the late '70's early '80's. I say " competing" as I was on a GK24, so it wasn't really a competition :)

She was on a round the world trip in 2001 and got as far as Ecuador by 2005:

Don't know where she is now.

Carter Ragtime Pepermint

Hi there,

I used to own here sister boat Apache of Mersea which was a Carter Ragtime as well. I was based in North Fambridge and Peppermint was down at Burnham on Crouch. I raced in Burnham week in the mid to late 90's; indeed just looking at a 1996 picture of Apache racing with kite up on my desk now.
My Ragtime was also built by Winboats in Norfolk, but was a bit more fitted out below. We raced a fair bit and also cruised it with family too. Apache of Mersea was originally a Dabchicks Yacht club boat out of West Mersea.
Think Peppermint was built and sponsored by a sweet company hence the name. If you ask about in Burnham on Crouch, you may be able to find some more info; try contacting the Crouch Yacht Club or the Royal Burnham Yacht Club.

best Regards

Peter

I believe this was the boat that was originally owned by a director of Trebor Sharps, who also sailed Finns. It would have been about 1975. Trebor also sponsored a Finn at the same time, called Minty Bit. Sorry I cannot remember the chaps name.

Dick Carter died some time ago, but his design office at the time of the Carter Ragtime (IIRC) was headed up by Yves Tanton who is still around and a young Bob Perry and Chuck Paine (amongst others) were there on neighbouring drawing tables. Must have been quite a place.

You can find contacts for them all on the web, and they might have some info for you.
