Just scraped and pulled off the original cabin lining in my small motor boat. This left behind crusts of hard brown glue (Thixofix?) and a ton of dust. The plan is to reline with some sort of carpet/van lining. This is my first time at the job so I assume the surface should be as smooth as possible. Is scraping/grinding the best way or will some sort of solvent remove those pesky pimples and crusts?
Would a coat of bilge paint improve adhesion or just be stripped off by whatever glue is used?
Finally I have some awkward curves and shapes to deal with , does self adhesive material stick on contact or can it be re-positioned without losing it's grab? I hope there is a wealth of experience on this topic.

Having done a few, I wouldn't paint. Sand, scrape grind with an old worn flapper disc or a fine grade one. They can be a bit aggressive! Wear proper protective clothing and in as well ventilated environment as is possible. There are lots of good caravan/boat/camper linings available. Go for the one that stretches 4 ways. It's very forgiving and will handle compound curves and awkward shapes easily. Some linings have a front and back, with a finer plainer finish on the side that shows. The back will be more mottled or marbled. You'll know when you see it. Use a heavy duty spray adhesive on both surfaces. I find spraying and fitting as I go along works well for me and let's you peel it back and reposition as you go, giving an extra spray before final rubbing down. Any other questions, just ask. Hope this helps.

Doing this same job on my new to me Skanner 19, very helpful. Thanks
