Just how big an investment is a boat? I was thinking about this over the weekend (prompted by bills for servicing etc). In my case boat is worth about half the value of my house (but overall costs far more on an annual basis) and I was wondering how this compared for others, is this a fairly typical ratio? Anyone else want to share how the home:boat value ratio compares (no amounts, just the ratio, and no responses required from Leopard owners!)?

Boat value £50k house in Guernsey value £315k.

Would work out approx half the value of my place in Spain though.

I wouldnt bother counting the costs its far to depressing.

and why none from leopard owners? We had to sell the house to buy the boat, which is wiorth 92 times more than the tent where we live. As with everyone else, I would have bought a bigger boat but for the large expenditure in boat mags.

Well currently I'd say the ratio of all in boating cost to house is about 1:16ish, but when we complete the current upgrade it will be nearer 1:4 - however house prices are climbing at about 30% PA in my home town. So the ratio is always going to be skewed.

I would'nt use the word 'investment' in connection with anything to do with boating! My ratios are about 9:1 house/boat in terms of value which probably tells you something about whether I or SWMBO wears the trousers.
Actually, I seem to remember an article in one of the mags which quoted an average house/boat ratio of about 3:1 which sounds about right to me

8 bridging loans required please

I wd think boat cost:house value of 1:2 is about right. Dunno why, there's no logic to this at all is there? I'm not there yet, just buying another friggin house so can't afford boat, dang, ratio totally buggered up now, in fact 1:2 is number of boats:number of houses ratio, help!

The question was the price of boat relative to house not Soltron relative to house.

Cmon its not that pricey, 1litre treats 5000 litres therefore £60 (for the litre) divided by 5000 = a price increase of your fuel by 1.2p per litre. Thats not even the difference between premium and super!

Re: helps with maths homework

um "1:2 is ratio of boats:houses" but bio says you have 3 boats? So six houses? Or praps 3.333 houses if technically own 1.67 boats? Or is the ratio accidentally incorrect and should be 2:1, so you have 1.5 houses. Or 2 houses if rib is included on boat side of the incorrect equation? Check your working v carefully before bulldozing the wrong number of houses. Also, just because it's "your street" it doesn't necessarily mean that all the houses therein are also "yours".

House to Boat
Price paid 1.7:1
Value when sold 3.5:1

I reckon 3:1 sounds about right. However this is surely related to age and wealth. Once you've got a sufficiently grand house and aren't interested in building up capital then it's time to get a bigger boat.

Quite right. I withdraw all financial data until it's been properly audited, which will erm take quite a loong time and I'd best get someone else in to do it ;-)
