Just been looking at the Sealift 2 website where they suggest that regular hull cleaning is a cost effective alternative to anti-fouling. They offer 3 discounted vouchers valid for twelve months.

Avoiding anti-fouling sounds like a good idea so I propose to anti -foul no more and instead have a quarterly lift / clean. Any downsides, please?

I get away with one can of £100 a/f.
Would need to be one hell of a discount for a scrub?

I would expect to pay for a lift elsewhere at least every two years in order that the hull can be allowed to dry for a month .

You could antifoul every other year if you had scrubs during year 2 at sealift.

£100 plus in my case the cost (?) of paying to have the a/f painted on. This compares with a cost of £288 for three lifts / hull cleans a year for my 30' boat. I cannot help thinking it is better to forget a/f and have the hull cleaned regularly (but I may be wrong).

I tried something similar this year. I had all the antifoul blasted off October 2009. I then painted on one coat of antifoul.
Since then I have had 3 lift and scrubs at Sealift.
The 3 pressure washes have almost removed all of the antifouling. Something I'm not against as I get back to an almost bare hull. However, it may be better to use a hard antifoul instead to get the maximum life out of the paint.
The cost of the 3 lifts is more than an annual haul out but I can get other jobs done at the same time. Greasing the Maxprop several times a year, changing anodes etc.
I have one Sealift coupon left that I must use before the middle of January.
However, having tried it I think that this coming year I may go back to antifouling.

sounds s good idea the charge for them to lift pressure wash and two coats af for mine is about 2400 euro whereas a lift and scrub is about 600, at which time I can do the anodes etc

Ours gets done bi-annually i.e a/f, anodes, and prop dressing if required, We get a lift and chock for seven days, at £16 a foot special offer during June. Plus a/f at £100, anodes £70, and time to polish topsides

I don't know where you're regular berth is...however, if North Sea-based it is almost impossible NOT to antifoul I think. This year, the growth was excessive -I've heard it everywhere. It would have taken a lot of lifts to stay clean enough in order get into planing in a normal way i'm afraid. By the way: to those who DO antifoul: I personally mix about 300 gr.of cupperpowder extra in 2 litres of antifouling (INTERSPEED) - does a great job ! But, as usual, not suitable for the drive or prop's.
