Pondering buying a French registered boat - Monte Carlo 37 - any pitfalls with French registration or transferring it? I currently have a British registered boat which I keep here in France. Is it possible to cancel a French registration and re-register it in the UK? Much rather a red ensign than a tricolour! ...... also Le Permis Cotier , a certificate of some sort ... what's that all about? Is it compulsory? Maybe another reason for British reg? .... anyone navigated the French paperwork?

No problems. It is up to the seller to remove it from the French register as part of the transfer of ownership process. You can then immediately put it on the UK SSR and still keep it in France.

That's handy .... same as my current UK Part 3 reg then ... gets cancelled on transfer of owner.

I've just been through a french deregistration.

There should a orange book with all the details in it. When you de register you get a certificate stamped which confirms dates on the registry and all taxes paid. I also got a stamped very saying TVA was paid.

I had to send a lot of paperwork to prove I was not living in France and that I was not economically attached to France.

I am resident in France but could use a UK address if necessary! .... Which would be best/easiest/required?

Then strictly speaking you do not qualify for registering in the SSR which is for UK residents only. You could, however, use the Part 1 register.

So, when you say resident are you domiciled there?

When Seralia was taken off the french register I had to prove I was not living in, earning or paying tax in france. I pointed out you cant prove a negative but the registry asked to see:

UK passport
UK drivers License
Proof of address in the UK by way of bill or bank statement
UK tax return (i sent my P60)
Plus I had to sign a declaration that I was not and didn't intend to live in france.

There is an annual tax paid by french registered boats, so if you are living, working and paying tax in France and then really you should have it on the French flag. In fact, seeing what they wanted to me thy would probably view non-registration as tax evasion.

That's a pity - yes, I live here full time. I also have another boat here which is UK Part 3 registered - this is easy to de-register by just giving them the name of the new owner when I return the certificate - the registration is then cancelled. How the French love their paperwork!

Tranona is right ....... just looked it up ..... CAN'T register it Part 3 because I'm not living in the UK for 185 days but CAN register it Part 1 as an overseas citizen .... £124.

That would require a tonnage survey, proof of title going back 5 years which should not be a problem with a French boat and a named representative in UK. Pretty sure you will be liable for the annual tax, but not have to comply with French equipment rules.

I looked into a tonnage survey for my last boat because its Part 1 had expired. This seemed a nonsense as I am sure the boat hadn't grown or shrunk unduly since its original registration when new. Survey cost was I assumed ~ £500 plus possible lift out, but I guess it could have been less.

I opted for SSR.

Note I am currently applying for SSR for my recent acquisition and they are taking an age, but only £25. A Jersey registered SSR number is not valid in the UK, even though of similar format.

Yes, the powers that be want a load of stuff translated into English and I don't really think I can be bothered ... I'll have to fly a tricoleur, shout 'Allez les bleus' and 'Vive les baguettes!', and hoist my ensign on Trafalgar day when nobody's looking!

tonnage survey is a lot less than £500. mine added £100 to the cost of the pre purchase survey I was having done. Its a measurement rather than a survey

Good argument for having an MCA approved surveyor do the main survey. Standalone tonnage survey is £200+ and travelling expenses on top, so make it an expensive do if the boat is in France.
