I brought our 1981 Moody 36S over to France in 2016. I live in France and with the UKs up and coming BREXIT from the EU on 31 Jan 2020 only a couple of weeks away I thought I’d present my experiences in transferring registration to France. The French are as unprepared for Brexit as the U.K. their systems are all paper driven and don’t care for paperwork in English. Our boat is part1 registered, and the steps needed to register here follow:
1. Deregister the boat, in my case from the part one register at Newport. Complete the Deregistration form and send it by post. You will need the original de registration certificate and a copy of the registration certificate so don’t destroy your old one.
2. No matter the age of the boat, have your VAT exemption form available. If you haven’t got one and the boat is older than 1985 you must have some proof of purchase prior to 1985 that shows it VAT paid or included in the price.
3. take either of the above to the local Impot de Finance (tax office). You need to obtain a “quitas fiscal”, it’s free and it’s just the French version of a VAT exemption form.
4. Complete the form available here.https://www.demarches.interieur.gouv.fr/particuliers/immatriculation-bateau-plaisance-navigation-mer (this will change to the online process).
5. take all the paperwork to your nearest customs for boat registration in my case it was Sete.

dont be surprised if you are sent away to get something else. I have imported my cars and now my beloved old boat. If you don’t ever intend to sell it in France my advice would be leave it with uk registration. If you wish to sell it, it will become even more bureaucratic after Brexit.

processes here are changing daily, so this is not gospel!!!
