Having established how wonderful it would be to have separate boaty and non-boaty forums, i really think it is time to go the whole hog and improve local accountability by separating the boaty threads by region as well.

Incidentally, if this idea doesn't work, i plan to blame some dimwit and fly off to america where everyone regrds me as highly as Churchill, and certainly not as some ineffectual ninny with a stupid grin whole floats daft ideas from time to time in the media but rows back from unpopular-sounding ones well before the evening news.

Before you leave us ( and I thought you had a nice job lined up in Brussels?) a special thanks.

On behalf of the Welsh nation may I thank you and the kind British people for building us that lovely new building in Cardiff. We must also thank you for allowing us to vote for loads of us to get jobs in this 'assembly'. We are particularly grateful in that in so doing you made sure that we had no accountability, responsibilty or real influence over anything. You have howver provided us with the opportunity to do what we are good at ... talking.

Please give our love to the lunatic on the other side of the pond.

P.S. We would could do with a few million quid a year more for expenses as our houses are not as nice as your lot in London. Thanks in anticipation of the cheque....

Assuming you are referring to Holyrood - the second part of your analysis is true - it represents the Central belt.

Keep the South out of it, we are just as peripheral as the North in the minds of the great Cooncil below Arthur's Seat.

We used to have one but you took it away. You obviously knew more about running Ulster than we did. That's why it was such a success....

"You" being of course collective.

Re: Howay the Lads

Didn't the Geordies just stuff it to 2 Jags

Wonderful to listen to the grudging excuses

Bet they don't have the nerve to try Yorks and Humberside now - not even as a last resting place for slugger Prescott.

Slightly more seriously...

On the day it was revealed that the North East had stuck 2 fingers up at Two Jags, it was revealled that the South West already had one, sitting in Exeter.

A few days later the news broke that the East of England Regional Assembly backed plans to build God knows however many new homes, as long as the Government stumped up some more cash for roads, rail, new Regional Ass HO, better expenses and extra Jags to get from County Hall to Regional Hall etc. etc.

I think the bit where 2 Jags went wrong was asking the Geordies to vote on it.

Re: Slightly more seriously...

Those ones are different. Apparently they run all over the country and are basically county councils getting together to work on regional issues . In total they cost about 1.5 million. I think the 2 jags versions were going to do the same things but with elected proffesional representatives and cost lots more.

I wonder why that failed then!

Thats good news then. Nuclear Browns all round to celebrate

Thought there was some sort of vote on Euro-constitution coming soon

That will be more work for the No10 laundryman.

The South West regional Assembly cost over £4 mill other year, and they have 11 jobs going at the moment. It's not a assembly as we now one, just a overseeing body for the RDA's, regional planning, and hold around 100 meetings a year, nothing like the Scotish, Welsh or NI assemblies.

Now now, there's nothing wrong with our wonderful Welsh assembly, it's just that it's full of politicians. I propose a new rule - anyone who WANTS to be a politician is automatically disqualified 'cos they're only after money and power. That should open up the way for some decent people who can (in best seafaring tradition) be pressganged into standing for election. Then if we don't like them after a year or two we can make them walk the plank!

I've always said that the best government is what they had in a Greek city state (if my memory serves me well - if not I'm sure someone will put me right)

Every five years, the citizens would elect one of their number to rule. He could refuse, but if he did they had a special retirement plan that involved an axe.

He ruled as absolute dictator for 5 years. If he decides to build a bypass, the direct action protesters become part of the foundations.

BUT

They then had another vote to decide if he did a good job. If the Yeas had it, he was richly rewarded. If the Noes had it, it's that axe again.

Now can we have a vote on TB and cronies, please? I've got the axe ready...

I believe we are going to get the opportunity to vote on TB and his cronies , early in the new year. Your suggestions of any possible alternative? Besides which he got us into this mess, he should have to sort it out!

Ahhh, the eternal paradox. If we want him to sort it out we have to re-elect him. If we re-elect him he thinks he must have done a good job so carries on as before. If we don't re-elect him we get the other lot who will do an equally bad job. We're really stuffed!

H'mm, there is also the other possibility that the "other lot" may be no worse, and wom't be the "current lot".

The other lot may also be less addicted to, among other things, more pointless legislation, compulsory training/licensing/EuroRegs, banning anything they don't do themselves, stealth taxation of everything and forgetting history. They may not be but IMO its worth the risk:)

Be bold

The real answer is for London and Home Counties to declare UDI and get shot of all the other spongers. Spoze we'd have to keep Hampshire, coz that's got the Solent.

Re: Be bold

yeah. The vikings had the right idea but that wishy washy King Arthur and his lefty round table wanted everything all inclusive, and laid the foundations of the welfare state DESPITE the fact that he was chosen purely on measurable performance, the nerk.

One excellent option is for several of us to apply for some of the fancypants jobs in the Sunday Times. Here's one - General Manager of FMCG group : salary package = £80,000 +Middlesex. Which is quite generous, really.
