Any thoughts on refurbing my Selden gear?

There are 12mm pins through the kicker ends and the boom to mast gooseneck connection. Some play has developed in the castings, there's no wear on the pins and there is plenty of meat on the castings. It seems to be mechanically sound, but rattles annoyingly.

I figure reaming the castings and fitting a larger pin will fix the problem??

Rather than fitting new pins, ream out and fit bushes. I used plastic domestic water pipe, slit lengthways and cut to fit. I thought this would give me a season, easily replaced. That was five or more years ago, still the same plastic in there.

A bonus, noise is considerably reduced.

We had a similar problem, slightly different application, but was within warranty and the fix was bushes - stainless - which have been good for 20 years. It was not the noise that prompted the fix - but the idea that the increased hole size would eventually fail. The bushes should have been fitted as standard.

Our Selden boom is held together with fancy Alan slotted bolts. The bolts are security fittings, instead of a hexagon hole they are 'flower shaped, 6 petals with a pin in the middle' and need a special Alan key to release (which was not supplied at commissioning - and not noticed by me until we wanted to take the boom apart in the middle of nowhere, when the outhaul failed).

Take care, stay safe

Jonathan

Interesting! Thanks. I hadn't considered bushes. The aluminium castings are 20years old, so I thought I'd get another 20 out of them without bushing.
