Tried to refuel yesterday at St Kats prior to my trip back to Ipswich and couldn't get any fuel in !! Left Ipswich with a full tank Saturday and was making our way back from Chelsea with just a bit over half a tank so decided that a top-up was necessary.

Problem was the nozzle kept cutting off... Now I know that the fuel barge was ok because boat refuelled before me and also while i was triying to resolve the problem. Also this is not the first time this has happened.. (happened at Chatham and Gillingham)

I checked the tank breather... that was clear, I checked the refuelling breather, in fact I disconnected that from the tank... so no problem there and I also checked the main hose to the tank for any kinks (which the man on the barge was 'sure was the problem')... but that was ok.

I can always refuel fine at my home marina, but then there is no cut-off on the nozzle ??

Any clues??

btw - managed to get about 50L in over about half an hour to get home.

thanks

I have notice that some fuel pumps have larger nozzles than others. Could be that when using a larger nozzle your fuel breather isn't big enough, and as the larger nozzle is taking up all of your fuel filler hole (not letting any air out from the filler hole) this causes the trip to keep cutting off. Maybe?

Did you try a funnel/churn?
At least that would have "proved" whether it was your ability to take the flow or some ledge/back pressure that kept tripping his shutoff

I've had the same problem taking on fuel from high volume pumps. You just have to feed the fuel in gently. I find what sometimes works is to lift the nozzle slightly out of the filler hole - maybe this allows air to escape from the tank faster
