I've found two makes: Waeco & Isotherm, can anyone recommend either or a different make?

Hopeful thanks,

John G

I have a Waeco fridge (CR65), and both the fridge and small freezer compartment are excellent. I also have the Waeco Coolfun 40D hybrid cooler, which is also very good, so my experience with Waeco has so far been positive.

Hi John
I fitted a Waeco CRP 40 last year due to space restrictions where it had to go and very pleased with it, main thing is it's quiet most important when you are sleeping 8 ' from it.

Also bought the Waeco controller, this allows it to run off the mains when plugged into a marina then 'automatically' switches over to 12v when you unplug.

Also note additional vent grill fitted

When out sailing I run the engine about every 3 hrs for about 10 min to keep the battery topped up.

Both Waeco and Isotherm use the same Danfoss BD35 compressor so are very similar in performance.

Your choice will boil down to your preference in the differences, which from memory are:-
1. Waeco has a properly rated 3 star freezer compartment I believe (minus 18) along the top of the fridge which is larger than the freezer compartment in the Isotherm. Depending on how much you need / use the freezer, this may be overkill. We decided we aren't on the boat long enough to need things freezing for 3 months, and we don't eat much ice cream, preferring to buy when we're out rather than keep on board. Although we do need a freezer we don't need it to be very big, or cool things as low as minus 18. Besides, that extra cold temp comes at a price in terms of energy usage.
2. Isotherm do a Smart Energy controller to reduce energy consumption. Extra cost, but it's not offered by Waeco. May or may not be important to you.
3. What size and shape hole do you have for the fridge? How much bother / modification will it be to fit either?
4. No such thing as too big a fridge (in terms of capacity). Which make between the two offers the biggest litre capacity for the size of the hole you have available?
5. Edit: For information, Isotherm fitted OE by manufacturers. Not aware of any Waecos fitted OE but I could be wrong. Waeco more favoured by the caravan & motorhome market, although they are of course just as effective in either, and both applications have similar demands.

For us, all things considered, I chose the Isotherm and fitted a smart energy controller. It's been excellent and very energy efficient, so no complaints.
Your choice depends on your circumstances and priorities.
