Our compressor has finally turned up its toes. I've spent some time tracking down a suitable replacement plus evaporator plate plus thermostat (which died some while ago).

The peculiar shape of our existing box means that only a very small number of plates will fit comfortably.

Tried to buy an "Isotherm compact classic 2007 flat evaporator" (which isn't - its L shaped) from an online chandler. "Oh dear me no sir, special order, 4-6 weeks" Can't wait that long for a cold beer. Bit miffewd 'cos they advertise speedy delivery and nothing on the web site indicated special order.

Have now discovered the Isother G E 80, which appears to use the same compressor but a different evaporator plate, its also around 90 quid cheaper.

I'm confused, the first is said to be suitable for a 60L box and the second for a 80L box. The compressor is the same, the consumption figures are the same.

I believe in the "no such thing as a free lunch" axion so why is what appears to be the better product cheaper?

My brain hurts.

It could be a bit like the Swiss Watch sydrome, the smaller it is the more expensive.

The smaller plate requires more work to design and build to get the same refrigerating effect so they will charge more for it; possibly also different materials??

Has your evaporator plate also broken? if not then why change it? If your old compressor is one of the Danfoss BD models it ought to be a straight swap.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry this is a bit tardy - been playing with the boat rather than the web. As far as I can tell the evaporator plate is/was Ok but there would be two different refrigerents involved I think. The old plate would have used freon and the new compressor something else.

Anyway, bit the bullet, bought and fitted the whole shebang and now have cold beers again. Also using far fewer amps.
