Hi there,

Getting a bit of water build up after I hose down the boat or heavy rain and figured that this was getting in through the very old and worn out rubber seals that go around the port locker in the cockpit and the cockpit floor locker.

Going to use Sealsdirect to get my seals from, but how do I know which shape/type will be the best fit for the lockers?

I was thinking of getting P42 on this page - http://www.sealsdirect.co.uk/shopping.asp?intDepartmentId=3

I didnt want to get P43 incase it's too thick and either the cockpit floor locker doesn't sit down properly on the ground, or I put too much stress on the port locker, lock.

Also, do I just glue these down with superglue?

Many thanks,

JR

The same company sells a two-part impact adhesive, which is what I used. Easy enough to work with, and no sign of it coming off so far (about 18 months). Seems very convincing; apparently they stick hovercraft skirts together with it :)

Ah that's reassuring, thanks. Do you think the P42 size will be okay for me? I guess you can't really tell without seeing it.

You'd think 2mm is so small it wouldnt make any difference anyway :s

Absolutely no idea :)

What I did for mine was to put a blob of blu-tak on the hatch landing, close it, and then measure the thickness of the squashed blu-tak. Bear in mind that it might differ in different places, especially front edge vs back edge. Also that you do want to apply a certain amount of pressure to the seal, not have it just kissing the other surface, so it wants to be slightly thicker than the blu-tak which is just a guide. How much thicker depends on the overall thickness of the seal...

Unless the design of the lid and landing clearly demands otherwise, the seal is usually better off on the lid. If you put it around the hole, it's liable to get damaged as you pull stuff in and out, especially on a big locker that you shove heavy and bulky items into like a dinghy.

Get some acetone as well for cleaning the fibreglass before you apply the glue.

I hate living 1hr 20 away from my boat, means that I can't pop down and check things like that out.

I may just get the P42 and try that out this weekend. If it's too small then I will return it and get the size bigger.

I was going to fit it like in the below drawing (excuse my artwork, it took 5 seconds :) )

Thanks for the acetone tip.

Last time I did a job like this the company I bought from supplied a bag full of samples for a small cost. I would ask for a couple of relevant pieces.

Yeah I just got sealsdirect to send me a bunch of samples. Probably the sensible thing to do, it just means that I wont be able to get the seal work done this weekend and will have to postpone until next weekend.

I have to admit to initially just buying a length on ebay for a locker lid, as I was keen to get on. It was the wrong size and useless for anything else, must have just binned it. More haste...less money? Ha.

lol definitely better off getting a sample selection from them. Just like getting jobs done and ticking them off, so that I can move onto the next one.

I suppose that the boat has been fine for the last 15 or so years without having the seals fixed, so one more week one hurt ;)

Got plently of other jobs I can do this weekend instead.

Thanks all.

I used these

AEN7 A/B Expanded Neoprene 19x10mm 2 x 6 metre roll £12.73 0.0% £25.46

Did the job, self adhesive. Bosh!
I think that's similar to what youve currently got on (kind of on anyway). Figured that the P/tadpole ones would be better because theyre not as foamy and would absorb any water and seem a bit more heavy duty.

If yours are working then that's cool though. Similar prices too.
