I have recently purchased a 2004 Jeanneau Leader 705 which has a fairly tatty wood effect steering wheel. The wheel appears to be plastic with some varnish like layers giving a wood effect with has now peeled off in places.
Any suggestions to making it look good? Or just replace the whole thing...?
I wouldn't replace the whole wheel (unless you are looking for things to spend your money on) I'd paint it ....brown.
But if you really want to spend time on it why don't you see if there are ideas on the 'net? Here is just one that I came acros
ANOTHER ONE You can sand, prime and paint laminate as if it were a solid wood piece of furniture! It's easy to skip the sanding step, because sanding is a drag… but it's especially important with laminate. Because it's often somewhat glossy-looking, and important to sand it down until the finish is very dull before priming.Mar 16, 2017
The wood effect is probably in the plastic not the coating, as far as I can tell. If it was my boat I would try stripping the coating off first then revarnishing with the hardest glossiest varnish you can find. You will need to do this off the boat because the best finishes will be sprayed on or dipped then rotated as it dries.
