Thanks to everybody for the advice. About 10 mins ago I bought a Garmin 620, brand new in box c/w charger brackets etc.
I had to take at this price £280. as it fitted my budget more than perfectly. I already have my Eagle Optimer fishfinder / sounder, I am now going to upgrade vhf to AIS type.
Could you guys give me an opinion if I have done the right thing.
Regards to everybody,
Rob.

Has it got charts loaded for that price, bargain if it has. Can be used in the car also ;)

I bought a 551s for £399 a couple of weeks ago - Great but for the fact you lose a lot of detail when you pan out slightly :(

Have you sussed which mmmddd configuration to set it on!

Nice plotter, but unlikely to include charts at that price - if it does, you've done very well!

I think I paid £360 for my GPSMAP620 last year, so you certainly got a good deal. The ability to use it with its internal battery (which has pretty good lifetime) or from 12V in the cradle is the reason I went for this model as I wanted to be able to use it at the helm and below. I have mounted the cradle in the cockpit via a waterproof multi-pin plug/socket (Bulgin Buccaneer) so that it can be removed along with the plotter. So far I have only used it on a couple of trips at the end of last season, but I have been impressed with it. The screen size is OK and resolution is good (better than the 500 series). The touch screen is not very sensitive and I find that using a fingernail is the most effective. Charts are expensive, I went for the G2 Vision, but I am not convinced of the value of the extra functionality on a screen this size.

Couldn't agree more. At the risk of stating the obvious, the 620 supports NMEA0183, so make sure that any AIS and DSC VHF equipment also run this protocol - otherwise you'll have to buy a converter.

Like some Raymarine for example. The little box you need will cost half the price of your new plotter!
