Thanks for the previous advice about buying a dinghy to 'mess around with' at my local sailing club.
We eventually settled for a 'Skipper 12' ( yes you can all laugh and the club commodore may shed a tear!) But it is safe, steady and light to move around.
The one we bought seems sound, no water in any of the foam filled cavities and all the bits more or less complete.
We want to be able to reef the main sail especially if our grandchildren are on board and I have marked the sail ready for the boss to sew in patches for the reefing points at 30" up the sail which I think should be about right?

Rather than raise the boom we want to lower the yard/gaff to bring the sail down.2020-06-14 16.45.35.jpg

Hopefully my sketch is decipherable/understandable
The original boats had a clamp device which I believe clamped onto the gaff/spar, it had a ring which could slide up and down the mast. Perhaps there is some device I could adapt?
Your advice/ideas valued as ever
