Usually i have the all-in-one ballast version, but the looseleaf seems a good idea: leave at home the notwanted-on-voyage bits, next year just buy the updates. BUT does it fall apart like many looseleaf systems by about August? Is its binder even more bulky than the standard copy? What do you think?

I use the loose leaf. Sits better on the chosen opened page. It is larger, but I don't notice. I use last years at home for planning, then update when I get on the boat with the current version.
Annual updates are cheaper too.

I bought the original Looseleaf, before I could update they changed the binder with different hole punching, so need to buy new binder again. Defeats the easy update facility. Its also bulkier than bound copy.

Looseleaf and then laminate the pages you want to use en route.
Makes them virtually indestructable, you can chinagraph on them etc. Means you have a slim binder with just what you want in, the rest is kept for reference/emergency.
If you can't be bothered with laminating the loose leaf one is fragile (the holes tear) and bulkier.

I also thought it was a good idea until a few years ago when they changed the ring binder hole size /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif had to buy a complete set and binder... defeated the object /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Once the looseleaf one has slipped off the chart table, found its way under the pile of foulies at the bottom of the companionway steps, and been jumped on a couple of times, its useless. The bound version lasts a bit longer - front and back covers come off but not much important there.
