Just about to buy an old Avon Redcrest dinghy. I've never owned so need some info.

Are there different types of outboard bracket? If I get one (online) for an Avon will it fit any Avon?

What is involved in 'servicing the valves?' Is it something i can do myself or is it going to make buying a secondhand dinghy non cost effective?

Thanks in advance

O/board bracket is specific to the Redstart / Crest model ... and you can obtain in Mild steel (normal supplied one), stainless steel .. Not Avon, but 3rd party company and VERY expensive, a GRP one - but not so easy to find - was Avons later attempt to sort the model - be ccareful as other GRP ones do not fit, and a plastic one - again expensive from a 3rd party company.

Mild steel ones - I have my third for my Redcrest ... was about 80 quid at Aladdins Cave Swanwick. They last a good few years ... my Avon must be one of the real early ones !! The last two brackets I had were both second hand - that's why they didn't last as long as they should have.

Valves - many people service / replace them ... myself - I used a Service Centre and have no complaints.

The Redcrest / Redstart are excellent durable, tenders ..that will go on for donkeys years ... patched, repaired, new valves etc. - they just seem to keep on going ...

A few years back - there was an article in PBO about making a DIY outboard bracket from studding and Marine ply ... can't be that difficult surely ?

I once made an Avon outboard bracket from 15 mm. copper pipe and Yorkshire [soft soldered] fittings plus marine ply. It worked perfectly well but went rather green in the marine environment.

Thanks for that.

I guess its the cost aspect that I am interested in.

The Avons seem very good but price wise it does not have to cost me very much before I should have bought a new Seago etc.

Any ideas on price for the valves and bracket?

As Nigel says its the same bracket for Redstart, Redcrest also Redseal pre '96 and I would quess the Avon 7. Redshank was larger.

The brackets for Typhoons are similar but the spacing of the attachments is different.

Take a look at This page on the Polymarine site

Brackets for Avon redcrest and redstart are definitely different.....I have both types of dingies and have two different brackets. The difference is only slight but enough to distort shape if you use wrong one. I thought Nigel (sbc) was saying the same in his reply.

As far as I know the older ones were same .. but I know that Avon did have 2 different ... for other models. Maybe I'm wrong then ...

But pricing ... standard bracket is about 80 quid ... stainless I think was near 200, the poly plastic job wasn't much cheaper than the stainless one. The GRP one ??

As to whether an Avon is worth it ... I think the fact that you see many old Avons still working .. still for sale ... and not so many others of similar vintage speaks for itself.
