Red Sea Safari (Rally) - Winter 2014 /2015

The Suez Canal transit fee includes some form of insurance. Exactly what it covers is unclear, me thinks it's geared more towards the protection of the Suez Canal Authority than you. Hence why 3rd Party cover as minimum.

Is rustybarge coming or just posting a warning?

I'm just an armchair sailor, please ignore my commentary, I was just updating the news from Egypt, that's all.:)
Sounds like a fantastic destination, with some of the best suba diving within close reach of the med.....

Who can tell what will happen in Egypt in the next few months, everything may well have settled down with the new American backed regime in power.

Just wondering how you all got on, and hope you are all keeping safe....
please be very careful where you go.

latest news from Egypt: Uk and Canada have closed their embassies in Cairo because of terrorist fears.

We're all fine down here in Hurghada. There were 10 boats in the end and we're having a great time, exploring Egypt and snorkelling/diving on the many reefs and wrecks.
We're keeping a close eye on the FCO website and are following any advice they publish.

It's definitely different from our usual winter spot in Spinalonga, Crete!

Hi Folks, glad it's all going well. We here in Cyprus are drenched!! Raining causing flash floods, cars stranded and traffic lights out.

The sea all white caps and cold with force 6/7.

Will hopefully all clear by wed.

We have a facebook page with updates and photos - search for the Red Sea Sailing Safari and you'll find us all there. I'll put some pics up tomorrow when I can get on the laptop.

Hi to all and thank you to Norna Biron for answering in my absense.

The rally has gone extremely well so far. The initial sign up was 19 but by the time we arrived at Limassol Marina (the start point) we were down to 13 one of which was still in the Ionion with boat problems. Most bowed out through boat problems, only one was concerned about the political situation. Before we left Limassol 2 more fell by the way side, one had to rush home due to family problems and the other sold their boat (it had been on the market for a while). The boat in the Ionion had major engine problems and would hopefully catch us up. Unfortunately, the Gods were not on their side, after a month of repairs and moving against weather they managed to get to Crete but again weather and personal circumstances beat them.

So a total of 10 boats it is and what a great bunch we have. If you check out our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/redseasailingsafari?fref=ts you will see it has been one big party. Lots of sailing, some great snorkelling and diving, some great marine life and a hell of alot of good food and drinks.

Right now it's break time at Hurghada so that people can go sight seeing and exploring in land or go back home to visit friends and family. Early January we head south all the way to the border of Egypt and Sudan then back up to Hurghada before the final push up the Suez Gulf and back to the Med.

Those of us that have spent Christmas in Egypt left Hurghada marina yesterday and sailed 10 miles south to anchor off a beach beside a few resort hotels. 12 of us (from 5 boats) gathered for Christmas dinner on the boat with the biggest table. We split the cooking between all the boats and it was a complete success. A great day had by all, with as traditional a dinner as we could get!

Merry Christmas from sunny Egypt :-)
