We have been asked to consider organising a Rally from Greece / Turkey to Egypt (Red Sea) for the winter of 2014/15 (November to May).

To make this decision we would need to know the level of interest and therefore wonder if anyone on this forum would be interested in joining such a rally.

We (us and two other yachts, basically a mini rally) went there last winter and had a great time.

If anyone is interested please let me know.

Yes we are definitely interested, and going by the very professional/informative information you kindly sent to us. Shows you really know how things work cruising the the Red Sea.

Please note that the info is about our and others experiences of going to the Red Sea via the Suez Canal and sailing in the Egyptian part of the Red Sea.

It is not at this stage about any Red Sea Safari (Rally). If there is sufficient interest then I will put together a plan; " a cunning plan" with some idea of cost and see if the interest is still there. If so we may then invade Egypt.

Albert,

I'm very keen on joining the rally, singlehandling my cat, I hope that is not a reason for you in taking me along ( as it is for Lo). I'll pass on the news to a few buddies of mine as well.

And thanks for the very informative info you kindly sent me, sterling job!

We have no problems with single handed sailing, The longest leg would be from Cyprus to Port Said (Approx 220 NM). Most of the legs are kept to below 30 NM. I'm sure you are more than competent at berthing and anchoring single-handed. In Hurghada Marina the marina staff will assist and so will we and I assume any other boat who is there.

Great idea. I need a change of scenery. I knew a Canadian who joked that a medal should be struck and presented to any Brit who escaped from the Med. PM sent.

We are interested, however I feel that Winter 15 / 15 may be too early for us as I still working.
We would probably be retired now, but unfortunately my 2 sons broke with the family tradition of being idiots and turned out to be start.

We will follow your progress.

We took a Canadian Yacht (Dream Provider - Dennis & Helen) with us last winter 2012/13. They were great fun and we all had a ball. They are coming to stay with us back here in UK. They arrive on 30th Dec and will be with us over the New Year. We cannot wait for the party to begin!!

The response has been very good 25+ have shown interest since we first posted on 21 Dec. So we have decided to proceed.

To stay within the 6 month return fee associated with the Suez Canal the Safari will start mid to end of October and will finish end of April beginning of May. At present we are aiming for arrival in Egypt (Port Said) on or about 26 October 2014 with the departure from Egypt being about 22 April 2015.

We intend to cruise the whole of the Egyptian Red Sea (all the way south to Dolphin Reef / Port Berenice) and possibly venture up the Gulf of Aqaba to visit Petra in Jordan.

As it will be over the Christmas Holiday season we intend to spend a number of weeks at Hurghada so that people can fly home for Christmas / New Year etc. It also allows people to do some inland sightseeing (Nile Cruise, Visit Cairo etc).

We have no intention of dictating or trying to dictate how any captain should run his or her vessel, when or how they sail or what route they should take. Some people may wish to stay in one location (as some did on the Vasco Da Gamma) some may wish to go all the way south plus visit Aqaba. Some may just wish to go half way south. The permutations are endless. We just wish to take people to a stunning, beautiful and exhilarating sailing environment and let them have fun.

We will organise / arrange all the necessary paperwork, Marina's, Harbours and Agents etc. We will also advise on the necessary documentation needed, Yacht insurance cover, travel arrangements and crew changes if applicable.

As for safety due to Politics. We obviously cannot be responsible for the political situation nor can we guarantee anyone's safety. The responsibility will always rest on the Captain of each vessel. We can only advise. We ourselves will be taking advise from our own Foreign office (UK). When we were there last winter, there was a few riots etc but they were all in and around the Major Cities of Cairo and Alexandria. In the southern coastal part of Egypt we heard or saw nothing other than what we picked up off the Television / Radio / Internet. The UK Foreign Office had advised against visits to the Sinai due to local tribal unrest.

The master plan will be sent out in the next few days to all those who have contacted us. Along with that we will include application forms etc and an indication of cost.

Hopefully all the above will help you make a considered decision.

Those who are interested and not already contacted us should send a PM which should include their e-mail address. We have also created a Facebook page
( https://www.facebook.com/redseasailingsafari?ref=ts&fref=ts ) where people can contact us, obtain information and keep up to date with how it is all progressing.
