Anybody got one? I mean a small Honda petrol generator (just remembered Happy has!).
I saw one at SBS and was quite impressed. Are they reliable? Quiet? Good value for money? Is 1k enough? e.t.c e.t.c
Thanks

Have had one for 30 years, yes 30! Cost me £70 then. Great, never missed a beat. Loaned it to daughter's boyfriend about 3 years ago, havn't seen it since. He's history, so I suppose generator is. /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

Is 1kw enough? Depends what you want to run. Anything with a heater in (hair drier kettle etc.) won't work, unless you get a low wattage one. Can get 1kw kettles, for example.

a proper generator needs to be diesel and (most important) be very noisy to keep your neighbours awake. For top effect have two generators so you can start the one nearest them , and then they feel very grateful when you switch to the other on the other side

Or, if there's an "a" in the day, and argument wil likely break out at 1 am aboutthem keeping their sodding genney on all night, so start the generator nearest them PLUS the massive 20 amp engine blowers which a noise so they can't think, and they soon agree that it would be best if we all turned our gennys off.

I used to sell them, very quiet, and bomb proof engine, I recall they had a little black box that failed very occationally, in all they are A1, most Honda stuff is.

I put a little cowl over my genny exhaust, to quiten the exhaust down a bit, not very loud in the first place, (4KW) but it made matters worse! Had to take it off again, bugger now got six screw holes in hull! Mind you bought new batteries, so only run it for three hours every two days now.

One of the yachts I worked on had two, as part of the Lloyd's regulations we had one as an indepdent power source and another as a high volume fire/bilge pump. They were thrown in a corner of the lazzerette and only dragged out every year during the annual survey. Without fail and having received very basic attention (a spray of easy start and a cursory once over inspection) they started first time every time and ran beautifully smooth and quiet. We only used the pump once in anger when the exhaust elbow fractured and pumped about twelve tons of seawater into the owner's cabin bilge (oops!) and once again it performed admirably (apart from the exhaust fumes setting off the fire alarm and adding to the fun!) and had it all over the side double quick, all in all very impressive.

There was a discussion on PBO a while ago, I also did some research re prices for someone, look at :-

http://www.ybw.com/cgi-bin/forums/s...earch=true&Forum=pbo&Words=eu10i&Match=Entire Phrase&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Old=allposts&Main=383738

Hope this helps.

P.S. They are brilliant machines and the 10i was the correct dimensions and output for me. The next size is a bit heavier and bigger, so not as easy to cart around, but it is down to personal needs.

hardly ever running the gennys is very raggish. Likewise, hardly ever running the engines too. A chap over on another forum is ripping is electrics apart and using very dim nav lights which wil ensure that he almost never has to use the engine to charge the battery , altho of course he may get run down by a ship BUT at least he won't have to run the engine so it's all worthwhile , duh.

I have one but rarely use it since leaving the rivers and going coastal (very old boat vs new boat). Took it out of the box last week after over a year of non use. Would not start 1st time so put in some fresh petrol, then it started 1st attempt.
You can get a special cable for charging battery's directly from the unit, and you can "Piggy-back" two together to give 2KW output.
Very highly reccommended IMHO

Brilliant kit & always run well - I wish I hadn't got rid of mine. But I couldn't believe my eyes when I was down in B&Q in Bristol the other day. They were flogging 900w gennies for 99 quid! I nearly bought one 'cos it was so cheap. No idea what they're like - just thought I'd mention it.

You can also get them on ebay, either 2 stroke or the larger 4 stroke for about £150.

Careful, Moose. First off, a 1kW genny won't even boil a kettle (most domestic kettles are 2-3kW). In fact, it may not even run SWMBO's hairdryer. It would be OK for power tools and charging a laptop, but power tools are all battery powered anyway, and small inverter is a better bet for the laptop.

Secondly, look on the top of your engines: I'll bet it very clearly states that they are not to share an engine bay with a petrol installation. If you stick one in the engine bay, you'll be crawling around in there with fuel cans, and you'll have to bodge an exhaust system together and hope it doesn't melt a hole in your hull.

Other alternative is to have it on the swim platform/cockpit/flybridge. ANd then people will think you're a ditchcrawler, or a raggie or something...

Had one of the whisper ones, but 1k isn't enough. It could boil the kettle, but that would be your lot.
Whisper genies are good, but go for your optimum size, not economic. Also try your local Caravan suppliers, you might find it cheaper?
