We have a small flybridge cruiser (Jeanneau Prestige) and the question is where do you fly your ensign from?
It does not have a radar arch as such so we fabricated something to fly it under the radar mountings.
But should it be on the stern of the boat and if so which side? or does it not really matter as we are never likely to be asked to join the RYS

I think ensign normally on port aft.

[/ QUOTE ] Is that a rule, as mine is on the Starboard at the stern as my entry port is on the port? so I can't put it there.

Re: Where are your flies?

Yep. must be at the blunt end, LHS or RHS no matter.
Of course, an inset fitting just above the exhaust would be stooopid.
(Anyone want an old red duster more black than red???)

Strictly speaking - and being pedantic - the ensign should be flown......

Re: Where are your flies?

On small craft it is more or less accepted to have your esign flown on a staff at the stern. On big ships be they grey or otherwise the ensign staff at the stern is for harbour and at sea it is flown from the mast above the bridge so that it can be easily attended by the bridge staff. The key thing really is it should be flown to indicate the nationality of the vessel, and it should be the proper one not something chosen by the skipper because it reflects his/her politics, looks nice or matches the paintwork.
