I am on a bus in Central London and looking down Carthusian Street I see an enormous Red Ensign on building-side flagpole. Any explanations?!
The Chamber of Shipping. It has been there for decades.
I've also noticed a white ensign flown at St Anne's Church, Limehouse. What's the protocol for Churches doing this?
Are they flown or worn when on top of churches?
St. Anne's has special permission to fly the White Ensign, not sure why- maybe because of its prominence in the East End docks and being used as a land mark for shipping. Its clock I believe has a direct line of site link to Greenwich which controls its timing.
So why happens on St Georges day. Can we fly the white ensign then?
Are we the only country who cannot fly our national flag?
The white ensign isn't our national flag, that's (for the English) the St George's Cross.
