We have been living aboard in the Med for the past two years. Is it me or are there a number of patently Spanish owned boats flying our Red Ensign? I would not mind but they are invariably the cheap printed variety often left to rot on the backstay. This sort of abuse is an insult to the thousands who have given up their lives under that particular flag. Is it some sort of tax dodge?

There are advantages in owning a British-flagged vessel in Spain, so far as rules and regs are concerned. The Spanish authorities are well aware of this and have introduced legislation that forces a foreign flagged vessel in Spanish waters for more than six months to be re-registered as Spanish. So far nobody seems to be taking much notice but it may come.

Yup, its a tax dodge.

And used as such by many nationalities. The Red Ensign is to yachts what the Liberian flag is to ships. Forget the jingoism.

Many foreign companies such as the container shipping giant 'Evergreen' are now flagging their ships under the Red Ensign so that they can take advantage of the tonnage tax benefits introduced by this government. As the last Conservative government scrapped the regulations regarding officer nationality on UK flagged ships, this now means that there are plenty of 'foreign' ships under the Red Ensign that do not employ a single British officer or rating onboard! Surely this is an even greater insult !!!
