Often claimed in these parts that the dye in red diesel is designed to stain persistently, but having serviced my engine yesterday, the alloy filter bowls showed no sign of staining, so I suspect the s/steel fuel tank would be the same.

What bits of the fuel system get stained?

Probably none, but it would not matter anyway - it's only the composition of the fuel sample that they draw upon which they can fine you.

Oh come on now - you've not had it long enough to get real staining ...

flexible fuel pipe? (but easily swapped and mine has yellowed nicely from age)

I'm not aware of any law that states that pipes, filter bowls etc. must be clear glass or plastic. Any tax authority would be on very thin ice trying to prosecute you on the colour of your pipes or tanks provided the fuel inside is sufficiently white.

Wonder if you can buy red fuel lines?

Yup- Max Richards of Pegasus Speed Needs who supplies spares to Speedway Riders at the tracks has reinforced fuel pipe in red, blue, green, yellow, black and clear.Sold by the metre. I use it for the bodies of fishing lures-works very well. Only 8mm ID though-but as it is intended for methanol fuel FAME in diesel wont be a problem...............
