Ok, currently we have an agreed concession until 2007 for the current rate of duty on red diesel. At this time, we are faced with the possibility of this tax concession being removed. Where is it stated that boaters will be forced to use white diesel???
Due to the problems involved in boatyards changing tanks, lines etc and red still having to be available to commercial users, surely it seems a more practical solution to simply raise the VAT level on red diesel to 17.5% and then everyone can survive & be happy. Even HM Gov't.
The amount of panic that seems to be ensuing is currently unecessary at this time, IMHO.
With regards to some of the slagging off I have been reading between Mobo's and Raggie's, I find this disgusting between groups of intelligent adults who essentially enjoy the same leisure pastime. If the worst happens, then the knock on effects will affect everyone alike.
All of that aside, I am getting sick of seeing Red Diesel at the top of this forum every time I log on or even refresh. There is a forum specifically for this subject, please use it. An initial new post here on the subject to make users aware, is fine but please take it to the correct forum.
Rant over.

Kim, is it possible to move the current post to the correct forum?

Not the point Kev. There already exists a post for the red diesel issue........or is Kim wasting his valuable time trying to be flexible. I do read these posts with interest, just don't want to read them on this forum.

I agree with your 'rant' entireley, I'm sick to death of looking at RD postings on this forum, is there nothing else going on in the wonderful world of boats?

Guilty as charged

Sorry, I'm recently guilty but it is a subject close to the heart of many moboaters at the moment. There are many threads which I find tedious and I dont bother reading them but I would defend anybody's right to post on whatever subject they wish providing they comply with the rules of the forum. So, basically, if you dont like it, dont read it

Re: Guilty as charged

I refer to the reply I gave to the honourable member earlier.
I do want to read it, just not on here. It's a concern for us all.
Anyhow, I am now being guilty of propogating this post on the subject, so I will refrain from replying here.

Yeah, I'm still licking my wounds from scuttlebutt last week. I cant face any more rounds at present.

I agree it is speculative at the 'mo..but it is best to try and make everyone aware of the issue. Perhaps we should confine this all to the red diesel forum which is why it was set up.

I agree with your analysis that a hike in VAT is the most likely outcome.
My guess is the following....and I stress it is only a guess, so no hate mail please.

Inland Waterways....derogation removed altogether...use white diesel.
Coastal Vessels...Two rates of VAT one for Commercial one for Leisure.
Possibly 25% vat for Leisure users. Up to marina operators to charge right level of VAT therefore collecting the tax on the Gov's behalf. Commercial vessels may require some sort of exemption certificate.
This way it may be enough to pacify the EU for a further exemption, and it would bring the fuel price roughly into line with Europe but not the 90p per litre that everyone fears.

Steve.

All narrowboaters (many of who are the sort of liberal greenie that Tony loves) vote against the cronies for ever! Many "continuous cruisers" nicked for being in breach of licence conditions, cruising has got pricey. Others nicked for using heating fuel in engine,

EU/Gordon cheer the idea of a 25% rate of VAT as VAT cannot be reduced or removed once set. Boaters with sludgy tanks demnd "value" in the fuel on which they pay value added tax.

ISTR one of the clauses in Maastricht was to do with VAT, once something was rateable it could no longer become derated and once a rate had been set it was not supposed to be reduced. Caused a stir about rating levels on children's clothes/shoes and books and magazines.
