PBO, arrived today, makes it clear that cheap red diesel may well be a thing of the past and that MB owners will be very hard hit.

Sailors of small, slow boats may struggle to sympathise, muttering that those who swoop past Chi Bar beacon at 20knots on a Sunday afternoon, within a biscuit-toss of slow yachts, would be better off finding another hobby. We will however feel for those, I am sure the vast majority, who behave well and will be thousands worse off.

So how about restricting use of red diesel to skippers/owners who have passed a RYA skipper course?

They have shown their commitment to safe, considerate seafaring and thus deserve to share the red diesel dispensation with the professionals.

Those who have no 'ticket' would have a real financial spur to get one, thus increasing safety for everyone -- and helping the RYA face down the bureaucrats who urge skipper registration.

Just a thought

Chris

Having met some superb "unqualified" skippers with tens of thousands of miles under the keel, and some complete assholes with the requisite pieces of paper, I fear your idea may not fly.

Interesting to see your comment about compulsory registration - I'd say your idea is more likely to be the first step on the way, not a means of fending it off.

Those who didn't already have one would just do a fast track, just to get the discount. Behaviour would remain the same.

I'm committed to safe, considerate boating and wouldn't consider going near a sailing school ever again - last time I did, aged 8, I had a sh*t time. Any suggestions about how you could practically implement this fine idea of yours?

As one that always potters (sub 6knots) out to West Pole with narry an acknowledgment from the raggies - does the fact I hold an RYA qualification mean I should be going full chat from the point at which the speed limits stops?

I guess it would get more a few more waves of acknowledgement....

Rick

I would rather the RYA spent their time and energy (and my money - although I shall not renew my membership) lobbying the MB manufacturers to make more efficient and environmently friendly engines.

I know what you mean about whooshing past the bar beacon / west pole. As a mobo'er I always depart and return from as far east as possible, leaving at least 100mtrs or so between myself and boats heading straight in / out of the harbour. I pass west pole by at least 500mtrs before turning west. I am a good boy /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

TROLL !!!!! and not a bad one.

personally, I think it would be better to restrict red diesel to those flying the EU ENSIGN! a much more attractive bit of cloth than the red ensign, and less socially divisive than the blue one

I resent the implication that I'm not committed to safe considerate seafaring because I haven't joined the desktop sailing brigade. I was quite capable of negotiating the Emsworth Channel and Chi entrance safely and considerately in the early '70's before your "tickets" were invented and having one wouldn't change a thing for me. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
