At the moment I've go wind, auto & tridata on the binnacle with the Radar on an instrument pod above. I hate the instrument pod and wish to get rid of it .. but I want the radar display visible from the helm. This will invove recutting the binnacle. Any ideas .. think BoatMike? did something similar last year and I'd be interested in his and similar experiences.

if you can find the manufacturer twd be a good idea to buy a new blank to reposition everything.

Dunno why you hate it tho. It's fine. wot dya think is wrong with it? okay, so it looks like an adapted midget's bath but otherwise quite ok, and i reckon you are just feeling you oughta do some boatfixing to keep up with everyone else efforts over winter when you've done sod all other than upgrade to a 2005 packet of butter.

Jimi,
I have fitted all that and an ST4000 head to my binnacle, but Jeanneau redesigned the thing with a deeper back bowl, to accomodate the 6.5 inches clearance behind the fascia for the radar and plugs. It was redesigned foir the 2005 model year. I also have room in the back for the Navbus junction box, the NMEA junction box, the Seatalk to NMEA junction box, and 6 way fused power supply distribution box.
I needed these extra boxes for the amount of NMEA interlinks, and to provide a clean strong NMEA signal back to the chart table where I have a Navman 3100 Repeater.
Wiring up the pedastal is a problem, it means that Radar cables have to be cut and refitted with plugs after threading up the conduits, which is a sod for servicing. Assemble and connect as much as you can to the 'lid' so that you can remove the whole shooting match with very little disconnection. Leave a reasonable length of wiring to allow working on the underside when needed.
I think yours has a Goiot pedastal same as the Jens, so you might want to enquire at the Jeanneau dealers (Clarke & Carter round here, Westway down your end) and see if it is a possible retrofit. Also, the sages will tell you that you have clipped the compass safe distance under the minimum recommended, but I am going to suck it and see with a decent swing, equipment on/off. Can always return to the previous condition if its too bad.

is there enough room to remove all three st60 instruments and fit the radar display in their place ... or something similar ... and then, remove binnacle altogether?

larger crew members will welcome the removal of such a fragile handhold ...

Get a sheet of white perspex or similar material from a sign maker and overlay it on the existing binnacle surface. If you make a cardboard template, the sign maker will easily cut the perspex for you, round the corners and bevel the edges and it will look fine. Cost should be just a few pounds if not free if you ask nicely

Actually its SeaVentures who have taken up residence in Hythe (where we and Jimi are moored) this year, preparing newly imported boats for delivery to their owners. Already quite a few tales to be told - some other time, maybe. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I only read as far as "At the moment I've got wind" first time and thought..."so whats new Jimi? Then I read the rest!
Yes mate it was me, but not on a binnacle. My wheel is bulkhead mounted on a sodding great big column with an instrument facia on top which is about 2 ft wide by 18 inches deep. I needed to reposition all my instruments so I used a bit of white UPVC board left over from cladding my house, cut all the holes in that with a bit of reinforcement underneath and bolted that down to hide all the old 'oles. Looks very good and allows easy access to the wiring behind by lifting the whole panel. Only problem is UPVC is a bit soft and can scratch easily but I dont find that a problem as its not exactly a work surface. If you want something harder you could face up with laminate I guess.

I think Aladdin\'s cave can help

They are going to start stocking cuban heeled seaboots this season. If you wear those with lifts and stand on a small orange box you should just about be able to see over your binnacle.

Listen, Lochinvar, you haven't laid off me since I fixed you up with that drunk bird in Japan. His whole blinking boat is fragile!

Bulkhead

My helmpod has 3 small units (multi/wind/autohelm). And I installed my plotter screen in the cockpit bulkhead. It's a decent-sized colour screen so it's visible to the helmsman and crew in the cockpit and it's also out of the worst weather - although it's supposed to be waterproof. Why not mount your radar screen in the same place?
