Is there any particular reason why affixng the foam to a bottom board and then stretching the fabric over the foam and stapling it to the bottom board wouldnt work?
We were intending to do this for cushion backs, and wondered why not simply do the bunks like that too?
Obviously they are not flexible for storage then, but any other good reasons why not?
Thanks.

Bad, bad idea. The sweat under will stink after a month. Do you replace them yearly because you never wash?
And how often do folk remove the covers and wash them? Or remove the coverings of their sofa at home and wash that?
I have never removed the covers on either of my boats to date,, albeit the little one got new foam and covers about 4 years ago.

Anderson, how long since you did yours?

Stemar, I had suggested that idea for ‘waterproof’ covers for the saloon, for use when at sea and coming in wet for brews and grub etc Bit like rucksac covers then whip em off in port for cosiness.

My bunk covers ... main cabin are like a corded velour - they get removed / wahed about each 2 years .... unless something happens to warrant the wash.
My forecabin has the original vinyl covers that have needed repair a couple of times over last few years ... basically the stitching gave way under the seam piping. I would change to same as main - fabric but have delayed it due to odd times condensation has been found pooling on stbd bunk ... easy to wipe up and dries fast.

Would I cover and staple under to boards ? No actually ... at least with the vinyl covered foam - I can bend enough to make removal from boat easy. If they were stiff board - then would not be so easy.

The bunks in my little Shetland cabin cruiser are made this way, and still good 45 years on.
They aren’t washable, but the covers that we use on top when we sleep are washed as needed.

I made my own cushion covers after watching the following tutorial from Sailrite:

purchased my fabric from Profabrics:

VINYL SEATING CLOTH

There are other options if you don’t like the vinyl, I just like to be able to have a simple wipe clean surface - grandchildren armed with chocolate, drinks and other assorted ammunition etc ?

I didn’t manage to make the cushions in 30mins but did manage to achieve a pretty good standard - quite happy considering I’d never done anything like this previously!

Sailrite have got some brilliant tutorials on Youtube ?
