I have been told that I need to buy a new raw water pump for my Volvo MD5B after it started leaking water from the tell tales holes and have been quoted £175 by Keyparts. Does anyone know if there any options for getting it reconditioned?
Thanks in advance.

Replacing the seals is fairly straightforward. A difficulty might arise if there's a groove worn in the shaft. It might be possible to slightly adjust the position of the new seals to miss the groove. If not, I believe that it is possible to buy a very thin ss sleeve to cover the worn shaft, but I have no personal experience of this and do not know where to get one.

My Yanmar raw water pump needed a new shaft. A replacement pump was quoted at £300!! A new shaft made in 316 s/s by a friend was £20. The lip seal was a rip off at £12. All well worth the cost/hassle compared to new.

Just been quoted for a complete kit of parts, including the shaft, from Motortech for a VP 2003 engine £67 + VAT

I once had a Yanmar pump reconditioned by Cellar marine at Porthallow in Cornwall. They did a good job including refacing the housing which had become worn

A kit should be available for this including shaft, seals and bearings. I did my MD7 one recently and the Volvo kit was c £70. Any Volvo agent should be able to get this for you but good advice and know-how on old Volvos comes from John Hawkins Marine at Rochester on 01634 840812. I'm getting so tired of the blank look from Volvo outlets that it's starting to feel like PC World or similar. Hawkins are very good on old Volvos and will post stuff.

I hope this helps.

Regards, Mudhook

John Hawkins is now part of something called Inchgreen (John himself died a while ago but I think his son is still involved there) and the number I have is 01634 841900.
Be warned that once I got a quote for parts from Hawkins and they priced it way ABOVE the Volvo list price!!

Thanks, the lady there was very helpful and told me that a new Volvo pump would be £280 and the repair kit £80.
However, the repair kit will not work if the inside of the pump is worn and if it is original and i'm pretty sure that it is, then it probably will be.
As it was a pump specialist somewhere near Penzance who condemned it, I think I should take their advice after all and get a new one.

But thank you everyone for your input.

not wanting to pay the vilevo prices I took my shaft and seals to my local bearing factor got the bearings and seals for £9.50 and have spare seals for next time as well.

Get a quote from Keyparts for a repair kit - it should be around £50+vat. The kit contains bearings, seals, shaft, cover plate, cam plate, gasket and all the screws. With that and a new impeller you will effectively have a fully reconditioned pump. Whoever told you that the pump cannot be reconditioned is being very pessimistic (or something).
