My old BMC unit is now very tired and bored out to its maximum, does anyone know of a company who does reconditioned units or of companies to avoid?

Regards

John

Any half decent Motor Trade machinists should be able to sleeve the bores and get the shaft rebuilt, but new shafts and all sorts of other parts are available from Calcutt Boats of Southam (they have a website). As far as I can see they have a good name and may well do the overhaul for you.

Thornycroft

Thornycroft/AMC in Preston specialise in Leyland-BMC-Thornycroft (all the same) 1.5s. I get all my spares from them and I've heard nothing but good about them from those who've had rebuilds. They'll rebuild your old unit as new or, I believe, do a factory exchange. One of my neighbours was even offered an upgrade to a 1.8 for a nominal extra charge when he had a rebuild a couple of years ago. They're at www.thornycroftengines.co.uk

You'll also find quite a lot on the Moody owners website: www.moodyowners.org.uk, both in the infoexchange and the tech library. Most Moodys were been built with that engine, or the 1.8 version, and most still have it.

Avoid GOSNAY'S on the Eastern Avenue near Romford. They have a reputation for B!!!!!!!G engines. They wrecked a classic car engine that I was reconditioning some years ago. I was not aware of there reputation at the time.
TK Engineering near Ford's Dagenham have a good reputation and I have a friend who regularly uses them. Also Burton Engineering on the Eastern Avenue, Ilford has a good reputation and I have used them myself on a number of occasions and have no complaints.
