Recommended Anchor for a Hunter 23\'

I would be grateful for confirmation from any Hunter 23' owner whether my CQR 15lb plus 8mm chain is sufficient for the East Coast.

Reading the Plastimo catalogue, I am expecting to upgrade to a Kobra 22lb unit.

I would imagine that it would depend on what surface the anchor will be laying to. My 22 footer has a 22lb anchor so I would have thought the weight wuld be OK.

I used a 7.5kilo Delta with 10m of 8mm chain plus warp on my Hunter 265 for some years on the east coast mud without any problems, although I did not anchor in exposed or sevre conditions. My current boat,a Hunter Pilot 27 has a 10k CQR lookalike which is less good & I am upgrading to a 10k Delta with all chain. If your CQR is a genuine one it should be OK in most conditions.I have found Seamark Nunn in Felixstowe very competitive for prices by the way.

I am of the school that considers the biggest that can be handled regardless really of boat size.

My 25ft'r has a 25lb CQR clone .... and to be honest I haven't detected any difference to the genuine CQR I had on previous - both hold in same places etc.

Having surveyed many a boat in the past - I was always amazed at some of the 'boat-builder' supplied dinky toys supplied as anchors .... I have seen 15lb jobs on some big boats - particularly MOBO's - which carry far more windage than average raggie etc.

Honest answer .... IMHO 15lb CQR is a good kedge .... go up size if possible for main and use as much chain as is comfortable / possible ..... that will add weight and also reduce snatch on the anchor when boat yaws / pitches etc. Rope rodes do not stop snatch on anchors regardless of elasticity - they don't have the weight and resistance to movement that chain has.

IMHO of course !!
