Can anyone recommend good books for children (aged 8 and 11) about any of:
- the life of boys and young men in the navy during the Napoleonic wars
- the navy during the age of sail
- piracy over the ages from a historical perspctive

Fingers crossed.

From Powder Monkey to Admiral by Kingston first published 1870. I found it in my grandfathers collection which i inherited. I didn't hold out much hope because it was so old but my children loved it as a bed time read when they were 8 or 9

Horrible Histories may be a bit 'schooly' but they do deal with a wide range of events..

Nelson
by Roy Hattersley. Very good on the life between decks.

Osprey Publishing specialise in Sailing Ship books, and have a couple of war games which might be useful.

Do the children use Kindle ? The format includes nearly every book published, and the medium might be more attractive than paper, and lead to them wanting to read real books for the illustrations.

Jack Tar: Life in Nelson's Navy by Lesley & Roy Adkins.

Hope I can help a little with "On the Seven Seas", "The Pirate Guidelines: A Booke for Those Who Desire to Keep to the Code and Live a Pirate's Life".

Amongst novels, Patrick O'Brian's 'The Golden Ocean' about a midshipman on Anson's circumnavigation is much less well-known than the Aubrey-Maturin series, but was written for younger readers - admittedly not quite as young as 11 perhaps, but not so far off if you are looking a little ahead, too. (A quick search has not thrown up a recommended age range amongst children, but it would not be a bad adult read for you to check its suitability yourself.) The Golden Ocean - Wikipedia
