Hi - in preparation for setting off to the sun later this year, I'm thinking about making a simple sun screen to hang off the side of our bimini which can be moved to whichever side of the bimini that the sun is shining on. Also maybe to hang over our sprayhood windows to give shade too.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a mesh type sun screen fabric available to buy in the UK? I've seen Phifertex mesh available from Kayospruce, which seems a bit pricy, so thought I'd ask what others have used.

Many thanks,
Nichola

If you can get it in this country, you need "shade-cloth".

Common in the USA and Australia, I brought some back from Aussie, and made up a Bimini type cover for our cockpit, to go on the same frame as the cockpit all-over extension cover, in a tan colour. The piece I have left over is to make a side screen.

You need to get the 50 or 65% UV block quality.

To show what I mean, have a look at this site - http://www.catalogclearance.com/products/tanshadecloth65__knittedshadecloth.html

Perhaps one of our Aussie or American colleagues could source a supplier for you.

Nicola.good afternoon. I have a largly glazed saloon on my motor cruiser which I have used in 35 degrees plus in France for the last 5 years . I am about to replace my solid canvass window covers with the Phifer product, hence I found your enquiry.
We have met and discussed this topic with many NZ, Austrailian and s.african boaters.Phifermesh is for fixed windows . For your flexibility look at green house or garden shading fabrics. Its cheaper ,lighter, easily stowable ,gives 50% shading AND it lets the breeze through ,a must hope this helps Alan
