My boat (a 25ft yacht) is on a swinging mooring in Gosport. I'm looking for a boatyard where I can get a few bits & pieces done, but most importantly I need the hull slurry blasted (or similar?) to remove antifoul plus a layer of epoxy coating. This is my first boat so I dont have any experience of my own to guide me.

Can anyone reccomend a suitable boatyard?

Southsea marina may be worth a ring there was a blaster there last week and gel coat remover so should imagine they'd allow it for yours.

Hayling Yacht Services will be well worth a ring. They do a lot of blast off and repair work.

(Sorry Mark, but you do keep shooting yourself in the foot. Still, it all counts towards that Big Post Total I s'pose . . .)

Re: I HAVE TO GROVEL!

Talbot was right and I was wrong: that workforce DOES exist. Not in the local telephone directory, not on Google, but they do exist.

I might have confused them with a handful of self-employed "craftsmen" working out of a shed in a local marina who have let me down several times in the past. Difficult for the poster to make contact with the spartan info provided - perhaps with the proverbial bargepole??

MarkS, if you want grit-blasting then Hayling Yacht COMPANY do it, I crunch through their detritus in the yard most days. And they ARE in the book and have a website, while several posters berth there - sbc has some detailed knowledge of their provision, tho' my comments are currently sub judice . . . .

Talbot, please accept my apology, if it were needed.

Hi Mark

On the other side of Portsmouth Harbour is Ken Brown boats. Although he specialises in launching RIBS, a large number of yachts use the yard for winter storage and for annual maintenance, including me. Last year a boat was stripped of antifouling and epoxy coating at the yard so I know they can do it. Tim is the yard manager and seems always willing to help. There is power and water too. I have used the yard for 3 years now and very pleased and cost effective. Downside, its in old Portsmouth which can be a pain to get to.

I am just interested in the reason why you have to slurry blast (or similar) the bottom of your boat?
Especially as you say you will be taking off a layer of epoxy as well.
Has the epoxy layer failed, and / or do you have osmosis bubbles underneath?

I had a pre-purchase survey that said "the epoxy resin has become soft and is peeling away in places". There doesn't appear to be any sign of osmosis (no blisters and acceptable moisture readings). I want to use coppercoat antifoul, so it makes sense to get back to a sound base before starting.
