Our new (to us) boat need a comprehensive upgrade of navigation kit over the winter. I'm planning to use Raymarine/Navionics including radar and AIS and while I appreciate that the kit these days is "plug and play" there is some interfacing to do with existing equipment (eg the very small Garmin plotter is linked to the Raymarine autopilot), so I'm thinking that a professional would be helpful. So, the question is can anyone recommend a marine electronics person in Plymouth?

Any recommendations (either way) gratefully received.

We're planning to embark on a similar project and since we moved the boat into Plymouth this year have also looked at people to do some or all of the work (yes, I could do it myself but then I don;t get the warranty!).

I've spoken to two:

- Mount Batten Boat House
- Matt Owen of PR Systems Marine Electronics

MBBH are on site at PYH and are Raymarine agents and AFAIK offer a 3 year warranty on any installation. They service our engine and are happy customers so in the frame for any electronics work.

Matt was recommended by a neighbour in the marina who's used him for his on-board electronics work for several years. I met Matt on board my neighbours boat when he was installing some B&G kit and had a long chat with both of them while Matt was working.

No actual electronics work by either of them but both are in the frame for when we get round to getting quotes done. No doubt others will have their own recommendations or otherwise based on their experiences - I'd also be interested to hear who else is out there.

Cheers

Off-topic: do you happen to know a chap named Chris Hart up in Cornwood?

Colin Merry of 'Merry Marine' ( colin.merry@btopenworld 07841642287 ) in Plymouth. Pro marine electrician, 'electrical installer to Pete Goss's boats', and an active member of the TRSC. One of us owes the other a beer.....

Marine Electronics Ltd over at Yacht Haven Quay (the dry-stack) are excellent. 01752 936007. They are at that sweet spot where they are a cut above the “man and van” brigade but not yet grown so big that they’ve lost the personal touch and just view customers as a profit opportunity. They fitted a radar and Chartplotter for us last year at Plymouth Yacht Haven. It cost only a little more than it would have done had I bought it from the internet and the installation is guaranteed for three years. I couldn’t fault them.
