I am looking for suggestions for mooring, anchoring, berthing in Mahon and Cuitadella for a few days in August.

The family like being tied up alongside so they can go for a walk without a ride in the tender. I am OK with paying up to 100 Euros for our 16meters but have heard that that won't be anywhere close to enough for the posh marinas in those places.

You're right about the €100 not being enough for a 16mt I'm afraid! It wasn't enough for our 9.9mt for an alongside berth (if you can find one in Mahon in August!) and that was in 2005!!!

Anchoring in the lagoon at the mouth of the harbour is OK but a long dinghy ride into town. Shelter is good there and so is (was) the holding. Sometimes they come round and charge and others they don't so it's a bit of a hit and miss situation.

Cuidadella was slightly easier price wise but also gets very full with boats rafted up two and sometimes three deep at the quay.

All this info is quite old and there are people here who have been there much more recently and can probably advise better than me. Just thought I'd drop my 2p worth in to get the ball rolling....

Good luck

Chas

Deleted User seems to be the guy to ask...........he had his boat over there for a while. Maybe pm him, he seems approachable enough and gives good advice.

Ciutadella

Hi, Just arrived in Ciutadella, The Islas Baleares by Graham Hutt is out of date ! As someone has already said, the ferry terminal is now outside the old harbour. We went aft too on what we thougth were the visitors mooring, first jetty on the right as you enter. Turns out its club Nautic and our moody 47 would have been 115 Euros a night. We were directed further in to the old commercial quay, told to wait next to the fishing boats until a spot along side the wall was free. Luckily only waited 20mins. We are paying 43 Euros a night to Ports IB(with power and water). Been told that they could raft 2 deep if it was busy and 3 deeps if theres bad weather.
Hope this helps.

That is a great help.
Thanks.

Any ideas for Mahon?

The cheapest port in Mahon which leaves you directly on dry land is right at the end of the bay, past the commercial quay, used to be the old dry dock. You can email Rosendo on info@marinamenorca.com for prices and to check that they have mooring for 16m boats.

You are well protected just past Isla del Rey where you can anchor, and it´s a short hop across the bay to the town in the dinghy.

Ciutadella - if you´re willing to moor stern-to with a rope (put some chain on the end, otherwise the rocks chew through in no time!), then Cala Degolladora is right by the town, and the dinghy ride will be very short.

Another very protected and lovely place is Addaia - either moor in the small port, or anchor 100m off. We have sat out the high winds of the last few days and the boat hasn´t moved at all.

Hope that helps

Justin

From their website, it looks like they are limited to 15m. I am 15.63m LOD (not counting the bowsprit).

Two years ago there were floating pontoons there which were about 80 euros a night. We stayed on there for a day - it was useful to be able to fill up with water. Can you just anchor off there????

Thanks for the recommendation.

We were there two years ago. Found it rather too quiet for our tastes.
But as safe as you could get from nasty weather.

Thanks!

Hi Michael,

Rosendo at Marina Menorca told me they have spaces for boats up to 25m at his port. I´d highly recommend them as being cheaper than the other Port, with better access than anchoring across the bay.

To get to town is about a 10-15 mins walk, and they have showers, albeit in a PortaCabin.

If you tell him you´re coming on my behalf, he may even give you a discount, as I said you may be passing through in August.

Thanks - I will certainly give it a try. That is Mahon right?

Mahon

Left Mahon a couple of days ago. We are now in Sicily. The Marina Menorca quoted us 125 Euros a night for 13.1m when I went to the office. The place (Mahon)is a rip off compared to other places. There is no port authority cheap berthsWe moored just inside the harbour on the right. . Great place when the weather is great.
The winds picked up to 35 knots with gusts higher. It was carnage, lots of anchors dragging. Didn't help that there was 41 boats in a small place. We dragged with, managed to get clear without hitting anyone and then the throttle cable snapped. Exciting night. Rigged up a bit of sting attached to a childs toy as the throttle cable !. Went along side Pedros Marine center on the commercial quay. They were helpful and cheap. The cheapest place was 80 Euros a night for a pontoon in the middle of the bay that had power and water.

Not much help to you as the info is out of date and for the wrong month! I was in Mahon in May 2007 and berthed bows on to one of the Sunseeker berths late evening. Next morning I thought it would cost me an arm and a leg, but the Sunseeker Manager (a guy named Ash) could not have been more helpful - and the cost.........18 Euros per night!

We have just left Mahon and we got the distinct impression that unless you are prepared to pay a rediculous amount of money, visiting yachts are really not welcome.
There is only one place to anchor, just on the right as you go in. If you anchor anywhere else the police boat will move you on to the anchorage where you cant be seen.
It does get very crowded in there, but we found the holding good. The old town is really nice.

The anchorage we enjoyed the most is Fornells. This year there were no buoys and no areas seemed to be off limits. Boats were anchored everywhere. This was a few days go - plently of space and we like the town.

Also a nice anchorage is Es Grau - the north side next to the beach. However, not much of a town, and not much to do there. The bay next to the town is very shallow (don't ask), and not really much space for a sailing boat to anchor. This is a great place for swimming and snorkeling. Lots of fish.

Addaya is OK - but there is really nothing there. But if you need to hide from a hurricane, that is the best place to do it.

At Mahon we used one of the pontoons anchored in the middle of the harbour opposite the Sunseeker pontoon. This was 127 Euros for our 15.6m x 4.3m. It had the advantage of being quiet (away from the road around around the edge of the harbour) and only a short dinghy ride to the town. The shower on the pontoon was quiet a useful way of cooling down.

The first time we wanted to drop the first dinghy load off on the Sunseeker pontoon as it is low down and convenient. However we got told off by a pompous English t****r with a bright pink face, bear gut and an attitude problem (probably a size problem - his was the smallest plastic mobo tub on the pontoon). Anyway, apparently the pontoon reserved for the dinghies from the "other side" was the one next to it.

We never went as far as Cuitadella - we have other places we want to visit on the mainland before the end of our trip.

Another vote for Fornells. Nice town - especially in the evenings - and regular bus to Mahon.

Tanking up with water may be a bit tricky as the pontoon is restricted in size. We always took a couple of jerries each time we dinghied ashore.

Fornells

Arrived in Cala Fornells yesterday. A Posideina guy in a rib asked us not to anchor near the town, as it was "not very nice for the weed".

Have anchored just south of the yacht club, where we passed a quiet enough night in a northerly 6. Land on beach just south of club pontoon. There is a free water tap on the north side of the club, with delicious spring water. Half mile or so walk into town.

Spent previous night in Cala de Algayerens, which is lovely, but obviously not suitable with any northerly swell.
