I learned in another thread that I spent Saturday night anchored close by another forumite without realizing. I believe there is a forum burgee, but burgees are rather small and hard to recognize at a distance (at least they are for me). In any event this proposal is not an alternative to a burgee, but to supplement it.

I suspect getting such an independent minded gang to agree my be too much to ask, but here goes.

Proposal: Forum recognition and invitation signal - UW9 -
Use: Fly this signal moored or at anchor to make yourself known to other formites in the vicinity.

Rationale: UW is a pretty innocuous signal, buried deep in the Misc. section, so no harm will come in case anyone misunderstands our use of it. Only 1,2 and 3 have been used so it is unlikely that they will ever get to 9.

For information: here is the official range of UW signals in the 1969 International Code

UW I wish you a pleasant voyage.
UW 1 Thank you very much for your cooperation. I wish you a pleasant voyage.
UW 2 Welcome!
UW 3 Welcome Home!

or you could just fly the Forum Burgee!

Excellent idea, I have a forum burgee, but I like the idea of UW9. I get to use three more of my signal flags!

I vote yes! I will start wearing that signal when at anchor.

Yes, thanks, I think I will get a forum burgee, but the proposal is not meant as either/or. It is easy to spot a burgee wandering round a marina but harder on an anchored boat 100m away.

And as Englander says, it would exercise the signal flags, which is a bit of fun.

I'd like to suggest that any form of signal that is too small will be missed. I think something more visual is in order.
Proposal:
If one believes that one is in the company of a fellow forumite one could invite a dialog by the following:
15 seconds of "Ministry of silly walks" up ande down the deck accompanied by random hooting followed by 15 seconds of deep bowing towards the vessel whos allegiances you are trying to establish.
Then wait 15 seconds to see if the courtesy is reciprocated, repeat as necessary.

Can't see how it can fail.

Thats ok for you chaps with yachts and masts. What about us chaps thats wander around in RIbs and smaller boats??

I think MikeMonty has the right sort of idea - although probably a tad too much imagination. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

How about a simple right-handed wave - followed by a single tap to the left shoulder. Nice and easy, clearly visible. Anyone giving such a wave wouldnt offend if the recipient was a non-forumite.

And instant recognition if they were. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Could we have an accompanying sound signal?
Say a cork coming out of a bottle?
I can detect that at 100m minimum.

Of course, there are a fair few of us who changed their forum name to their boat name, and filled in the bio with boat location.....
So my 'signal flags' are big blue rectangles on the guardrails with FULL CIRCLE written on them.

Except there is another Full Circle on the East Coast...... which is my excuse for being where I was not, if you know what I mean. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

But then what about those of us who have changed the boat but stick to the old boat name as the forum name? Can't cope with too many changes at once...
