I know you can receive grib files by e-mail and internet - but is it possible to get them via weatherfax with a SSB-receiver and a PC? JVComm32 shows weathermaps, but does not seem to have a facility for grib files, at least I cannot find it. Is there another software program that can do it? Or are they not transmitted?

Grib files aren't transmitted so can't be received in a similar way to weatherfax. It is possible to send/receive emails using an SSB transceiver coupled to a modem, then get grib files sent to you via emails but this is a fairly expensive and complex method. It is also possible to do the same using a Sat phone linked to your PC.
If you just cruise in Europe then you can receive TTY (text) forecasts for 5 days ahead using your SSB receiver/PC and a program called SeaTTY (google to find it). I have found these to be reliable and very useful.

grib files from UGRIB can be requested in such a manner as to keep the download size very small. eg less than 40KB. This makes it economic (25p) to use a mobile phone as an internet modem even at the extornionate rate of £6 per MB charged when abroad. Do not however use it for web browsing someone recently ran up a bill of £27000 in a month.
