If fitted the wrong way round the shaft will not seal properly on the 2 seals nor will it locate properly in the bearings resulting in excessive shaft and seal wear - Oh dear - those were the symptoms you had before.......

The longer slot is narrower and doesn't fit over the drive pin. And the shorter slot is a very loose fit on the impeller pin.
So must be the other way - long to impeller, short to drive pin.....
