REBORE

I have a Freeman 32 MK2, based in Hythe. One of the engines has lost some power and smokes more than the other. I have a choice of rebore or replace the 30 year old engine. The price of rebore was £11,000 !! the price to repalce both engines was £12,000. According to the chap I spoke to the reason the rebore is so expensive is that the engines have to be lifted out.

So at first glance it looks like the replacement engines are the best option. Can anyone advise me on whether there isa cheaper way of dealing with this?

So how do they put new engines in without lifting out the old ones. If you ask me he's priced the rebore at 11K because either he don't want the job or wants to sell new engines. Go somewhere else for another opinion. Theres heaps more work in replacing engines than there is in just lifting out and re fitting!

Whats the engine you've got that needs reboring?

I should imagine these engines to be perkins 6354 or 4203,4236 or ford, these engines are bullet proof , get a price for reconditioning your units from an engine reconditioner quoting engine no. and a quote off a marine engineer for engine in and out .

Welcome to the forum I think a little more info would help us offer opinions, tell us what engines you have. In general terms it always helps to get several different quotes for the work. The differing quotes may lead you to the most cost effective solution. If they are perkins 6354 you can see un used ex mod examples for about £1500-2000 through specialist salvage dealers and sometimes on Ebay.

Ford Thornycroft

If they are the same as my old Freeman 32 they are the Ford Thornycroft 108 hp engines. As someone else said, unburstable. But expect some smoke.
Definitely get a second opinion because I am very surprised they require this sort of attention.
If "down on power" means you can't get max' rpm (2500 from memory) there are all sorts of reasons other than would require a rebore. A compression test might be a good start. Worn valve guides may lead to excess smoke, as might a number of other things.
I think I am correct in saying that these engines were a marinised version of a JCB engine so there should be plenty around, but get that 2nd opinion.
A friend of mine swears by Ebbtide at Shamrock Quay, who would almost certainly be happy to visit you at Hythe.

I know someone with same engines and same boat who got rebore done for about 4-5K so you are being ripped off!

Get more quotes.

(For interest, he got his done at a company in Southend and has just sold the boat on after 3 years)
