As part of my ongoing(ie never ending) deck renovation I have removed the guard wire stanchions bases and underneath were some small wooden pads that also need replacing. Just as a matter of interest, do these serve any purpose or could the bases go straight on to the deck (with sealant obviously)

Cheers

Maybe they were intended to spread the loads. If you're going to put them back I think fiberglass pads would be much better. They are probably unnecessary however.

Also you could check and see that they are not in fact small teak wedges which serve the purpose of making the stanchion stand up vertically and not leaning over as they may do otherwise with with the camber of the deck. I've just rebedded several of mine .

If you want areally good sealant I have been using this for quite a while and it is brilliant. CT1 Sealant Adhesive have a look

Whichever sealant you use (and I nearly always use Sika Flex) a good trick is not to tighten the fittings hard down and squeeze all the sealant out when you put them back. Some people put the end of matchsticks under the fitting, but whatever you do, allow the sealant to go off and in effect 'cast' a gasket under the fitting and then nip if the fastenings the next day.
