Has anyone tried the 'Stopping Sea' excuse? I seem to remember it didn't go down too well with my line manager.

Yes. I took a few colleagues from work [at an educational establishment in Greenock] for an evening sail around the tail of the bank. I was persuaded to go along with a ploy that we had to be rescued by the coastguard and had been up all night .. we duly turned up in the classroom with oilies and lifejackets the following morning with a plausible story from a colleague who had obviously kissed the Blarney.

I suppose I should be flattered that the boss suggested that I was too competent to get us into that situation and called our bluff .. happy days.
