(I have also posted this on the yanmar help forum)

I was going to do the simple task of changing the anode in my 3gm30. I had left the manual at home and being the ejit that I am, looked about the engine looking for the anode fitting. I saw what turns out to be the fuel injector limiter on the front face of the engine and proceed to undo it with a 19mm spanner. Once I had removed the front cap (number 1 in the pic) a threaded (brass?) rod with a small bolt head visable in it appeared. I the removed the second nut (number 2) holding the threaded rod in( the one on the outside, not the small one). When I eventually realisied that had something very foolish I reassembled the whole lot as best as I could remember it went.

Just to clarify I didn't touch the small nut actually in the brass rod at all.

When I got home I looked in the manual to discover what I had done. It strongly recommends not to tamper with the fuel injector limiter or the governor for any reason. Can any one please tell me if I has succeeded in causing damage already and is there a remedy to this very foolish messing.

If you didn't change any settings I don't think you've done any damage. The limiter controls the amount of fuel for starting and the max rpm as well.If it started ok you should be fine.IMHO

Agree. If you have not changed the relationship between the shaft (threaded rod) and the rack you should not have a problem. The diagram on page 4.2 of the Yanmar manual shows the layout of the components and section 4.2.3 covers setting it up and adjusting.

Thank's for the replies. The manual I have isn't the official one but a third party repair manual by "Seloc" and doesn't tell you anything about adjusting (just not to touch it). As far as starting up goes, the boat is out of the water at the moment and I haven't started in a while. I might have to start up anyway soon for other maintenance work and I'll check then. Would removing the fuel injector limiter have any bearing on the fuel system directly, i.e letting air in? Should I bleed the engine?

What's the rack? Would the distance that the shaft is bolted in change this relationship? Because by undoing the second nut that distance may have been changed slightly.

The rack controls the amount of fuel that goes to the injectors. The bit you have disturbed is what sets the amount of fuel that goes in when you start the engine. The third party manuals are very short of real detail. If you are keeping the boat and intend to do your own work on the engine, suggest you get the official manual. Not sure of the current price, but I paid £25 for mine from the Yanmar dealer 7 or 8 year ago when I did a partial overhaul on my 1GM. Worth its weight in gold. If you PM me an email address I will scan in the relevant pages so that you can see what you need to do if you have upset the setting.

The second amazon link is the one I have. I downloaded the GM-HM service manual from DinghyMan's link but it doesn't seem to tell me anything about the actual adjustments of the limiting screw. It has details about the governor and an exploded view though. Don't bother downloading the manual to have a look it's 60mb.

PM sent to Tranona.

Thanks again
