I want to put two reading lights in the main cabin. Fed up with reading by head torch. Looked at some at the boat show - thought they were overpriced rubbish. Don't mind buying cheap stuff it it's, well, cheap.

Also, I'd rather have something that uses sealed 12V MR16 or MR11 bulbs rather than a separate reflector which might eventually degrade. Don't want LEDs.

Only thing I can find are these. Anyone seen these or something similar available from a UK supplier?

We use LED lights so need reading lights. What we have done is to buy two mains table lamps from Homebase. If you check the various ones they sell you will find some have built in transformers and 12v halogen bulbs about 20watt. Rewire them bypassing the transformer, but leave it in. You can then fit a 12v plug to suit your on board sockets, with a length of cable to suit it will reach anywhere you want it.

Oh! Also change the bulb to 10watt, plenty big enough. Total cost should be about £20 for the two.

Saw those but I suspect they're brassED rather than brass. I.e. they will go briefly green before going brown. These lights are for occasional use so no need for LEDs.

Saw a lot of boats at the show with recessed MR16 lighting. I've always wondered of the fire risk with those. They get quite hot! Could get brown spots on your deck?

Yes, that looks like a Frilight. I note that Malthouse also proposes Frilight but from ECS! The prices seem to vary enormously.
I'm surprised the quality is questionable. I've only looked at the Opal berth light and I thought it very acceptable. It sells for £30 at Force4.

I suppose they could if they were the correct type fitting but the 20w halogen bulb that I fitted is brilliant and I only want it for comfort reading snuggled up in me bunk in the winter when its so damn cold that sweets are sold wrapped up in bundles of snow.

For such short use - say an hour at a time i'm not that worried about 1.8 amp hours .

But I am thinking about the festoon replacements for the general lighting.

Find the nearest Caravan Dealers .... they have usually a shop dealing in all sorts of stuff .... this is right up their street !

I bought a bunch of shaded wall lights 10w each for 4 quid each ..... had one left after kitting out boat before ... so replaced light on present boat with it ... about 6 yrs ago ... it had sat in the drawer for 4 yr prev.

Ok photo is not so good ...... but here you are ... as example :

I like my parafin wick light for winter reading. It offers heat as well as light! It's also a nice warm colour of light for cozy evenings. Not particularly bright, but good enough for reading if you're relatively close to it.
